Custom Cabinetry FAQ, Los Angeles & San Fernando Valley.
Designers, contractors, and homeowners usually come in with the same set of questions. We have pulled the most common ones together in one place.
Who is ATA Custom Cabinets?
ATA Custom Cabinets is a family owned custom cabinetry and millwork shop based in Canoga Park, serving Los Angeles and Southern California since 1989. Our shop runs on CNC machinery and handles the full scope of commercial and residential projects, from corporate office buildouts to luxury kitchens and closets. Every client works directly with a professional from first call through final install, and every project gets the same tailored service and commercial grade craftsmanship.
What’s the difference between your commercial and residential work?
The difference comes down to standards, codes, and materials. Commercial projects are built for durability and cost efficiency, with materials and hardware chosen to hold up under heavy daily use and meet the codes that apply to offices, medical buildings, schools, and hospitality spaces. Residential projects are typically built with higher end hardwoods, veneers, and custom finishes, with more attention to design detail and the specific tastes of the homeowner or interior designer. The same team fabricates and installs both, and every project gets the craftsmanship and shop discipline we have been refining since 1989.
What types of projects do you take on?
Commercial projects make up a large part of our shop, covering casework, cabinetry, and millwork for corporate offices, medical and dental buildings, reception desks and lobbies, hospitality spaces, schools, and laboratories. On the residential side we build custom kitchens, closets, vanities, bathroom cabinetry, built-ins, entertainment centers, home offices, and bars. If a project involves custom cabinetry or millwork anywhere in Los Angeles or Southern California, there is a good chance we can help.
How far do you travel? What’s your service area?
Our core service area covers Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and Orange County. We regularly deliver and install across the greater Los Angeles area for both residential and commercial work. For larger commercial projects, our shop is set up to travel farther, and we have completed commercial buildouts across wider Southern California and beyond. If you are outside our core region and have a commercial project that fits our capabilities, reach out and we can discuss logistics.
Can you handle large or phased commercial projects?
Yes. Our shop is set up to handle large commercial projects, including phased rollouts where different areas or buildings come online at different times. We plan and produce to meet general contractor schedules, with coordinated deliveries, staged installs, and a lead installer overseeing each phase. Projects like multi floor corporate offices, medical practices, hospitality spaces, and schools all fabricate and install from our Canoga Park shop, so nothing gets lost in the handoff between crews.
How early should we bring you in on a project?
As early as possible. The best outcomes happen when we join the project during design development, before finishes, hardware, and dimensions are fully locked in. Early involvement lets us offer constructability feedback, suggest material options that save budget without sacrificing quality, and help avoid costly scope changes during construction. On residential projects, that usually means joining alongside your architect or designer during concept or schematic design. On commercial projects, we can engage as early as pre bid or schematic design, or any time before final spec lockdown.
How long does a typical project take?
Project timelines depend on scope, size, materials, and our current schedule. Typical projects run around four to eight weeks from approved shop drawings to completed install, though larger or more complex work takes longer. Once we complete a site walk and understand what is needed, we provide a realistic timeline as part of the quote.
Do you handle installation, or just fabricate?
We do it all. From shop fabrication through on site installation and final walkthrough, every step of the project is handled under the ATA name. That continuity from start to finish is part of why we can take full accountability for the finished product and deliver the quality our clients expect.
How does pricing work? Do you provide estimates?
Every project is custom quoted after we review the drawings or plans and understand the full scope. From there we provide realistic budget ranges early so you can plan, and a firm quote once materials and specifications are locked in. Any scope changes during production are reviewed and approved in writing before they move forward, so the final number stays predictable.
What materials and hardware do you work with?
We work with a wide range of hardwoods, veneers, laminates, and solid surface materials, selected based on the project’s standards, intended use, and design direction. Hardware comes from established manufacturers known for commercial grade durability and precision. When a client or designer specifies a particular material or brand, we source to those specs. When we are recommending, we lean toward options that hold up well over time and look right for the space.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. ATA Custom Cabinets is a fully licensed California contractor, with general liability and workers compensation coverage maintained on every project. License information and certificates of insurance are available on request for commercial clients, general contractors, and property management companies that need them for their files.
Do you offer warranties on your work?
Yes. ATA Custom Cabinets stands behind every project with a five year warranty on our workmanship. Hardware is covered by the manufacturer warranties that come with each brand. If anything does not look or function the way it should, we want to hear about it and we will make it right.
Tell us about your project.
If you have a question we have not answered here, reach out. We will get back to you the same day on commercial inquiries, next business day on residential.
